25th-Mar-2009 09:59 am - why, because I love you...
Why do I continue to look in your direction?

Why do I continue to call on you, night after night?
Why does your touch, your voice, your vibration, feel so right?

If I knew I would bottle it up, and sell it on the streets

If I could describe it I would sell it over beats

Its more than a fix I seek, I want to stay broken
Its more than a mix I need, I want to remain open

Though a full dose could kill me
A little bit can't fill me, feel me ?

9th-Mar-2009 09:43 am - My plant

I have had a few plants overtime, and the odd thing is that when I take them home, they die… well its not that odd.

My latest plant has stayed at my office. It is almost 2 years old and overdue for a transplant.

Its called lucky bamboo…but

(from wikipedia) The plant marketed as "lucky bamboo" is actually an entirely unrelated plant, Dracaena sanderiana. It is a resilient member of the lily family that grows in the dark, tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia and Africa. Lucky Bamboo has long been associated with the Eastern practice of Feng Shui. Japanese knotweed is also sometimes mistaken for a bamboo.

9th-Mar-2009 09:12 am - Back in the swing

Even though I do blog over at josephdbferguson.com I thought it would be useful to actually update something somewhere. So I will use this time to give an update on what the hell I have been up to.

Played golf this weekend to get back in the “swing” of things, that was corny. I bought some new tobacco for the huka, mint flavored. I finally upgraded my music hard drive to a 1tb drive…. nice. On that note I am looking for some new music to add to my collection, I have run out of options, I am now begging. And since I am begging, howabout a pretty girl with a nice attitude?

7th-Jun-2007 04:45 pm - Would the world end if I cut my hair

Most probably think yes.

I recently shaved all my facial hair, and I think I look like a dork, so I guess my looks finally fit my character! But what if I cut all of my hair off!?

But I disagree. In fact so often now I have my hair off my face, that I forget it is there. Sounds silly. But whats more is that I could really cut it and not lose any sleep over the situation.

There are reasons to keep it and reasons to get rid of the locks,

Pros:
Get rid of the dead old life that I led
Free myself from this identity slump
Move into a few more hat styles (big plus)
No more eating and having to worry about chewing your own hair (it gets in the way)

Cons:
No one wants to clean up all that hair
Not even sure my mother would recognize me
If I miss it, it will take some time to get it back !

26th-Apr-2007 10:00 am - Defending hip-hop

I plead the 5th, in the fear that I will further incriminate hip hop

I feel some responsibility for what has been said and how African Americans are depicted, I make this music. My purchases fuel this music. As a DJ I play this music.

I cannot defend hip-hop or rap music, but if I was asked to here is what I would have to say.

It is hard to parry the attacks on hip-hop / rap / urban music in the attention deficient society we exist in today. I think that as the music industry faces an attack on one of the most lucrative facets, there is much more that seems to be ignored in the debate. Without a representative that neither has a fistful of dollars nor album out in stores now, I feel a responsibility to illuminate some of the seemingly ignored angles.

The Sopranos Complex

I love movies that have action and violence. In fact, in terms of my cinema, I would prefer some blood, some sex, and some foul language. What does this say about me, not certain, but what I do know is that I am able to make those decisions and spend my money accordingly. I know there are plenty of good films out there that are about feel good stories and happy moments, but those films usually do not end up on my must see list. I think that music is similar in many aspects.

Frequently when urban music is brought up and blamed for adding to the corruption of African Americans I think of how other media entities affect other groups. One of the most obvious examples is the HBO Original Series, The Sopranos, a show which in recent times has been under scrutiny by the National Italian-American Foundation for the negative depiction of Italians and Italian-Americans. The IAF has even gone as far as disputing the filming permits for the shows series finale. I believe that there is a similar movement that has existed for years in the African-American community. But here we will stop and move to another topic.

The African American Community

My neighborhood is not predominately made up of African Americans, does this mean I am not part of the African-American community? Some races/ethnicities have representatives and groups to act as unions to improve or protect the rights of many members of the same race/ethnicity; does this make the groups they protect a community? I do not have the answers, but I will go further with the assumption that there is a community; what are the requirements if such a body?

Am I still a member of a community if I do not subscribe to the beliefs of the majority?

Does the community have or even require leadership or a spokesman to continue the pursuit of protection and improvement?

If such leadership is required, who decides, who votes, who leads, who speaks?

I will leave the above questions with the reader and continue further into the problems with properly defending or attacking hip hop / rap / urban music.

Smoking Chicken, Flaming Egg

What came first our inability to tolerate what is different, or our desire to increase tolerance? I imagine that they arrived at the same time, but from opposing teams.

The American culture has altered tremendously over the past two hundred or so years, what was taboo years ago could in some cases be considered normal. The allowance of sexuality, language, and violence has seemed to increasingly outweigh what is still considered too much. In the future, will it be ok for nudity to be displayed over public signals, will the blacklist of words and topics shrink? If so, who decides how this list changes; in America, it is the dollar.

Is the problem with the African American community isolated with the problem with American culture? Certainly urban music is not to blame for the shift in values in America. So is the African American community suffering because of a symptom of a larger problem? I think so.

I believe that we live in a society that is hypocritical. We teach and praise tolerance of opinions and ideas, but we also seem to be intolerable to ignorance and bigotry. I know that not everyone that walks the earth is expected to tolerate everything, but where do we draw the line? Once this line is drawn how do we react to transgressions?

Forgive my trespasses as I forgive those who trespass against me

If this was at all followed would we ever have to apologize?

If we were as tolerable as we teach and preach, would we consider either side of an argument to be trespassing?

As the conversation quickly seems to approach faith, I will again switch topics and leave those questions lingering.

Music as a method of speech

Before attacking it for its impact on the community let us first just remember that there is nothing illegal about the music. Many would argue that music is a method of speech that is protected by the first amendment of the constitution of this country.

Urban Music = Art?

Though it is a matter of opinion, it is very difficult for some of us to consider urban music art. At the same time, others do not consider throwing ink onto paper art. But if we do loosen our tolerance for what we consider art, wouldn’t that also force us to tolerate a wider variety of mediums? If music in general is considered artistic expression, is polka music not a form of such art?

I do not particularly think that all music seems artistic, in fact most of the urban music that has become so controversial falls into this category. What I do not agree with is the categorization that this music, which I among others consider non-artistic, should mean that it is scrutinized differently. The idea that someone or some group can decide what is and is not artistic, is not scientific. The sliding scale would just move from one genre to the next, until all that is left is, well polka.

While on the topic of categorization, let us face the loose labels that we are discussing.

Urban

Rap

Hip-Hop

Alternative Hip-Hop

Gangsta Rap

Breakbeat

Hip-pop

Pop-rap

Etcetera

We can place labels on the problem, but there is so much music that is not necessarily controversial. Let us not forget that there is music from the above genres that could be considered useful or empowering to the African American community. Why is this music not what we see on television? Why is this music rarely as visible?

Is popping the difference?

Some would say. The band/group The Black Eyed Peas, made a dramatic transition between albums. The audience changed, the number of radio rotated singles per album changed, and of course the amount of money they made changed. As the audience increased, the album sales and money followed. Followers of pop music may see this as a positive move, while others, and in some cases former fans, consider this move a sad trend. Many acts make the move from underground success to pop trend; from conscious superstars to TRL regulars. With the transition from the darkness into the light, a lot of times what artists have to lose is what made them popular in the first place, an opinion. In most cases that opinion never matched with the swift spiraling of our popular culture, but in order to sell art becomes a replica, no longer an original.

So Now What

Without going too much further we have to ask the question what do we do?

Is it possible that the chase for money leaves a bitter taste in our mouths as the rest of the world sees the African American community as it is seen on music videos and heard on the radio?

Does this same lack of respect and positive examples follow African Americans on all media facets, film, television, and radio?

What do we do?

2nd-Mar-2007 03:16 pm - Dreadlock information on the web
I am looking to gather a ton of websites that have information on dreads and maintaining locks.

I have started a google search that puts emphasis on dreadlock related results.

The search page is hosted by google DreadlockSeach

If you have any dreadlock related links, send them my way. I would like the search engine to be as useful as possible.

I am trying to get the search page to crawl the text in the memories page so that it is easier to find entries there.

Thanks a ton.

In addition to the money, Creative will now be able to sell "made for iPod" items, allowing them to finally sell accessories for a popular mp3 player.

Its like microsoft dumping money into Apple years ago, if you can influence your competition, you can still compete.

Without competition, Apple would face more problems with the monopoly people, not the Parker Bros.
24th-Aug-2006 10:25 am - Bob Moog
This man was responsible for the synthesizer. The synthesizer can be described as the single most important invention in digital music, some would argue. But think about what this world would be like without all the silly horn and guitar sounds from the 80s, or the syntesized voices that lead us to believe that pop stars can sing, or better yet, Lil' Jon's horns!

Robert Moog's legacy will live on. The bob moog fund for electronic music is looking for music for the podcast they have.

16th-Aug-2006 02:28 pm - well, I have a theory
Its a game theory

I was online yesterday and saw a link for some pre-game songs that were available to download (buy) on the itunes, I went to purchase the songs (I know, thats how excited I was), and the silly program told me it was unavailable in the US. WHAT!

So I did what anyone would have done, scoured for the entire album, advance or retail. What did I find

Both.
So for those who dont know Game Theory is the name of the new album from The Roots.

If you dont want to hear about it, dont pay attention to this post....

Track 1 - Dilltastic Vol Won(derful)
Great intro, to the point, if its over your head, or not familiar, you are missing a part of life. It is a reimagination of "Fantastic"

Track 2 - False Media
Opens with a speech, and the beat comes in like a old sounding drum break from the 60's. Ill have to see where it came from if its not original. Then the break comes after another explanation, the hook. black Thought comes in and gets to business, we start to understand early that this album is more than just an album. Black Thought has been using a track or two every album to get a point to your noggin; not anymore, its starting now.
"It looks real fucked up for your next of kin", "False media, we don't need it do we?"
Its like they left us with an open question. nice.

Track 3 - Game Theory
"You gotta let me know baby..."
This track is a reminder, that no matter what we do, we are all artists, and humans tied to this society and the game. It is the theory we choose that defines us, who we are, and how we are received.
"trying to be sucker free and free chumps and bustas"
What, Malik B? Damn.. its been a while.
I missed his style of flow, its different, sideways even, add that to the drums. A sideways verse over some abstract drums that have been filtered to sound like some stuff you would have to make on your own, yet still somehow classic, like... where'd he get that sample from.

more to come...

So I guess what happened was, google wanted to increase traffic to the video service they use. Simple plan, change one line of code, and impact the masses with less than 5 minutes of work to the page.

I got an idea, if I change my links on my page, or do something cool; lets say in 100 lines of code, do you think traffic to my page will grow exponentially?

like from 3 people, including my mom, to 10?

I will test it out next month, when the new site is completed.

15th-Aug-2006 04:20 pm - For those broke days..
Wiki how to of the day is

Making grilled cheese sandwich with an iron, never knew the real technique, but just in case you ever need to work it out.

http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Grilled-Cheese-Sandwich-With-an-Iron
On first thought
It was too early, it was too soon, hell it hasnt even been a full 5 years, so making a movie about life altering events that just happened, seemed wrong.

So I did it anyway, although I thought it was too early, I went to go see WTC the Oliver Stone movie, I wasnt prepared for what I witnessed.

as a sidenote I wanted to remind everyone that this movie could have been created to jog the memories of the voting public, but that is another conversation, for another day.

Back to the movie, WARNING, this is a spoiler... but we know how the story ends.

I realized when the movie started that there was not going to be a lot of activity before shit hit the fan. It all happened faster than I expected it to. I wasnt ready, and considering how the movie went along, the subjects of the film and the rest of the world wasnt either. It was scary, it was dark, and it was loud; I know that no surround sound setup in the world, could recreate the real situation, but damn.

As the movie went on I started to get that, sick to your stomach feeling; the audience was going to sit in the rock and metal, waiting for someone to save them, reality had set in, this was a shitty sitation. While it all went on I started to feel this overwhelming guilt. These men and women were willing to lose it all, to help others, the ultimate sacrifice, and here I was sitting in a theater, just attempting to grasp the situation. When it was all over, I felt worthless. It seemed crazy to go to work and just work on solving problems for students and staff members that are able, there are people out there everyday that need help, and we just sit, just like I was sitting in that theater, watching.

If you can go watch that movie, and just feel like you can go to your normal 9-5 gig on monday, i dont believe it.
For like a few hours. I came home today to find that the water in the apartment was not working, how cool is that...
Yeah, not cool at all. I dont know what its like to be in a third world country, but I know what its like to come home and not be able to wash your hands.

As a side note, I compare my hate for germs and human hand to hand contact to that of Howard Hughes; when I get home I like to wash, my hands and my body.

I carried in an old dusty computer that was ready for repair and went to wash my hands off. I was attempting to wash them of the dust, attempting to wash them of the door handles from the day, the dollar bills, and the keyboards and pens; I was trying to wash them with air!

that was not fun

3 hours later, no water.

I knew I was tired, and probably had my mind in the gutter, but I was certain that this is what I heard. I went on with my normal morning habits and slowly put it together. So I think I am due a late pass for not understanding that what I heard was Mountain Thrust, but seriously do we still need these names? Do our soldiers really care if we tell them these 'cool' codenames for operations?

Would they really be upset if the name of the operation was 'Operation Go Up there and Kill'em' ?
Do we really think that the enemy doesn’t expect that every operation has a negative outcome in store for them ?
If they thought otherwise, we could name them things like 'Operation Milk and Cookies'; although I am not sure if the Taliban members are lactose intolerant like me. We could call it 'Operation Soy Milk and Cookies' or 'Operation Rice Milk and Graham Crackers’. But if the enemy hears 'Operation Kool-Aid and Oatmeal Cream Pies' I am guessing they still would get guns ready for battle.

Whatever you choose, seriously does it make a difference; some would say that we do this for historical reasons, but wouldn’t we be able to just go back and fill in the uncool parts with information that makes us look cool, nah, the US wouldn’t do that, we wouldn’t make up information after an event.

So I guess I am not the only individual interested in language and how we are judged.

The good folks at MGroves have added an entry about Grammar Mistakes

From time to time you have to be a little more suspect of those with ears near where you speak. Although it is not the desired method of living, most people will make a judgment about a speaker based entirely on how they speak, not what they say.

My favorite experience with this outside of my linguistic courses was a conference I attended; while working at an Ohio EPA conference I was introduced to a young woman who was due to speak in a short moment. The background I was given about the woman led me to know and understand that this woman knew her stuff. To add to the situation she had a thick accent from a southern state, and spoke what most would consider to be African American Vernacular English; understanding that this was not common place among this type of conference, I wanted to further investigate how her speech would be absorbed by the crowd of mostly white Midwest /southern Canadian men.

What I found was great and at the same time sad, the woman, speaking on topics of water filtration and some bacteria issue, delivered an excellent presentation on her new findings and methods of resolving issues at local water facilities. The crowd, from what I heard and monitored, could not get past her accent and lexicon. It was clear that the knowledge this woman had to share, was being overlooked, because of her method of delivery. I am pretty sure that if the conference was held in Columbus, Georgia and not Columbus, Ohio, that there would have been less of a negative response to her dialect, but that was not the case, the mood of the crowd changed as soon as she opened her mouth; and the information she attempted to deliver wasn’t given the proper attention.

Where does this leave us, prejudice, we all are, there is no other way to look at it. I would like to think we northerners, or Yankees are worse than other groups, but I am probably wrong. We are quick to judge what we think we can sum up about an individual based on the delivery of language they convey. Is this right? I am guessing not, but is it common, I am promising so.

Instead of telling yourself to deliver things in a more clear fashion, do this for me, just learn to listen to the message, the delivery can commonly alter. If the people on CNN spoke like the people on MLK Jr. Blvd.,we would still listening to the news, we would just look at language a bit different. If you can tolerate listening to a love song done by a R&B star, you should be able to tolerate listening to the same lyrics with a country twang and a harmonica in the background; hell most country songs are better anyways!

Think about it, not the next time you open your mouth to speak, but the next time you close your mind to judge a speaker.

As a side note:
I am not requesting that we ignore the individuals who use language to convey moronic ideas, I am asking that we gauge the individual speaker for the content of the message, not its method of delivery. There are a large number of people that would not sound intelligent, even if they had the number 1 draft pick for accent and dialect, these people are not bad speakers, they just lack decent communication skills.
I guess I have to get up on some new stuff now.

I have had bootleg cable for about a year and a half; well lasnight was the end of the adventure. I got home
after a trip to the spot to pick up some food and what did I find a little note.

The note was from the cable company, with a smiley face sticker, it ready Sorry
we missed you, call today and save 50%. They got me, finally the tables had been
turned, I was on top for a year and a half and there was no regret about my
decision. My bootleg hookup cost me about 50 bucks and the guy who did it, never
even got to meet me.

So now what, I have a tivo box that I built that records TV
shows; Law and Order, Sex and the City, Seinfeld, and The Daily Show; problem
is, there is now no signal. Do I get cable just so I can satisfy my media
center's cry for a TV signal, I dont watch enough TV to justify the cost I would
pay. 60 bucks a month is nuts, and if I want the HD, to connect to my HD TV,
then I am looking at more, damn cable. The other issue is that I have had DSL
cable for about 3 years, and I knew that the connection speed that I was
receiving was sub par, but because of the bootleg cable, I wasnt really ready to
switch.

Well the time has come I have to turn the channel.
